Wouldn’t it be great if assessment was geared more towards our learners needs? Imagine if we could even make assessments enjoyable! Assessment seems to be mainly for us, the teachers. It is a way to document how well we have down our job. I believe, through portfolios, we can make assessments something more valuable for our students. Portfolios are a way for our learners to use assessment to further their learning goals and to think about their thinking. The use of portfolios, combined with opportunities to think about our learning process, can be a powerful tool for assessment for learning. Creating student centered and student created portfolios allows students, teachers and parents to see the journey of learning a student has been on. It truly is possible, and enjoyable, for kindergarten learners to use assessment for future learning. This approach applies to all grade levels and all academic areas. Join me and explore all portfolio assessment has to offer.
