Learning is a personal process, so it is vital that a teacher knows what her/his students need in order to be successful in the classroom. Each student has three psychological needs that must be met in order to learn: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. These needs can be met by offering a student choices for how they desire to learn. Once these needs are met, a student will become more intrinsically motivated, which will lead to increased levels of student engagement.
