Have you noticed in your classroom that some students have difficulty focusing academically, having positive social interactions or developing relationships with peers due to not being able to regulate their emotions and reactions to situations or problems during the day? When entering a classroom, all students come with their own individual strengths and needs which have derived from biological and environmental differences as well as have developed through personal experiences. Self-regulation is one of the social-emotional competencies that is a critical skill for all students to develop as they grow. Without self-regulation skills, a student’s academics, peer relationships and personal well-being can be greatly impacted. Self-regulation is developed through maturity but can be taught at a young preschool age. By scaffolding the elements of explicit teaching, modeling, practice, co-regulation and direct guidance, students can learn how to self-regulate. Mindfulness and calm-down strategies such as breathing exercises, yoga, and a defined calm down space in the classroom can effectively assist in defining and strengthening self-regulation. I hope you can learn from my research on self-regulation, the experiences in my early childhood classroom as well as how my implementation of calm-down strategies with preschool students was successful. If you are curious about how to help your students self-regulate to make them successful in the other elements in the classroom as well as learn about some strategies and resources, please join me to learn the power of mindfulness and calm down methods!
