"How do I design a curriculum to engage and build confidence in my students' ability?" As educators, I'm sure you have asked this question a time or two. Start backwards! The curriculum framework of Understanding By Design (UBD) can be used in any classroom to engage and build confidence in your students' abilities. If you are interested to explore how UBD has impacted student learning in a 3rd Grade classroom focusing on literacy, or you're curious as to what UBD looks like, this session is for you! I have implemented six literacy units designed with the UBD framework. Each unit was intentionally designed with learning goals and was taught using the Gradual Release Model.. Regardless of what you teach or grade level, you will learn about the three states of the UBD framework: Identifying Desired Results, Evidence, and Learning Plan. You will also learn about reteaching and the benefits of designing your curriculum backwards. My original intention was to see how it impacted students who were below proficiency. However, due to Covid-19, reteaching skills to students who were below grade level proficiency was unattainable. However, data was still available to see the impact the UBD framework had on my 3rd-grade students in literacy. You will see how the data shows the next steps in the UBD framework to help improve proficiency to students who were below grade level. I invite you to join my session and explore and wonder how the UBD curriculum framework might also impact your students.
