Have you ever stepped into a classroom doing guided math and wondered how the teacher decided to create their guided math groups? Is it more beneficial to create groups that are ability based, or is it more beneficial to create groups that are mixed ability based? I took the plunge and dug deeper into the research behind each method of guided math grouping. I dug into this topic because as a new teacher I did what all the other math teachers were doing and used ability based grouping, but I was curious as to if that was the most beneficial way to create groupings for my own classroom. In this session I will be discussing what I found to be most beneficial in my classroom after switching up my grouping after a few weeks.
