How many times has a teacher heard the words, “I cannot do this,” “this is too hard,” and “I do not like school”? How can we change students’ mindsets and thinking so they feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes? I spent time in my fifth grade classroom discovering how implementing growth mindset techniques, strategies, and theories affect student achievement. More specifically, I focused on how changing mindsets, in relation to math, impacted fifth grade students’ growth and achievement on unit tests. I hope you walk away with applicable teaching strategies, and examples, for you to use in your own classroom. This research was implemented in an elementary setting but is adaptable to many grade levels and content areas. If you are interested in learning about growth mindset, and looking at how this can impact students beyond the classroom, then this is the session for you!
