How many times in a school day are you asked things like "I'm done, what can I do now?" or "Wait, what are we doing today?". There was a point in my teaching career where I lost track of how many times these two questions were asked. Students in my 7th grade pre-algebra class relied on me to guide them through every step of the class period. I wanted to change the narrative by teaching and empowering my students to take control of their own learning. This is when I discovered the idea of self-managed (self-paced) learning. Along with all the changes and adaptations that teaching in the 2020-2021 school year brought, I embarked on the journey of doing just that. Perfection was not achieved but I learned what things work, what things did not, and how to adapt my thinking to help their self-management grow. The research I found and the data I collected proved that this concept can be applied to students in middle school and beyond, in any class discipline. Have further questions? I'd love to hear your thoughts as we learn from each other at my session. Hope to see you there!
