“I’m just not good at reading.” We have all heard things like this from our students, sometimes it is so embedded that we even hear statements like this from families. “Our family is not readers.” So how do we, as teachers, help our students overcome this type of mindsets? This question inspired my research on growth mindset. After some observations and a lot of contemplation I found my striving readers to be most mindset impacted, so they were the focus on this group of 6th grade students. Through this research I began to discover the importance of helping students believe in themselves. While my research focused on how developing a growth mindset can positively impact striving readers in 6th grade, I believe this research can be applied to many different content areas and age groups. While I will focus on students' mindset, other topics will include; teachers' mindset, reader’s self perception, Benchmark Assessment, and work completion. This seminar will hopefully inspire you to consider ways you might engage your students to be lifelong learners who believe in their ability to learn and be successful in our educational system. If you feel like your students could benefit from developing a growth mindset and are ready to engage in some meaningful conversations this session is for you!
