While scrolling Facebook last night, I saw that my aunt had put up a math joke. Being a math teacher who appreciates a laugh, I stopped to read it. Essentially it was asking who had put all of the math books into the horror section. This is how society sees math--horrific. How are our students supposed to feel successful in math when it seems like everyone is telling them it is ok not to be? In my years, as a high school math teacher, I have seen this lead to panic and anxiety. It has been crippling my students, leading me to research the why behind the anxiety. As teachers we have the power to help our students believe that math does have purpose. Math is something which can be enjoyed. Please come and join me in a discussion about the causes of math anxiety and things, we as teachers, might do to support our students who feel this way.
