How do we get students working together? Do you tell your students to turn to your neighbor and discuss what we just learned? This creates no structure or expectations for our students. If you’re interested in having an open and honest discussion about the importance of communication between students and how providing structures allow them to work towards a common goal more effectively, then this session is for you. I went into this school year with a need to change my 9th grade math classroom to a more student centered vs. teacher driven style. Taking a step back from direct instruction to allow my students to self discover and problem solve with their classmates was an absolute game changer. Even though this research was done in a secondary math classroom, the methods I used to structure collaborative learning can be extended to any middle or high school level classroom. I hope that you will be inspired to provide more opportunities for your students to collaborate and discover their learnings leaving this session.
