Have you ever wondered how our brains learn to read or what steps we as teachers might take in preparing students to become fluent readers? If you are interested in learning more about the science behind how our brains learn to read and what instructional strategies align with the science, this is the session for you! As a 2nd grade teacher, I wanted to make my small group reading instruction more meaningful and beneficial for my students. I found the use of explicit, systematic phonemic awareness and phonics instruction to be the ticket in meeting my students specific reading needs.
