Is this going to be graded? Is this good enough? Both of these were questions that were getting asked all too often in my 8th Grade Science classroom. I was excited to try and bring an end to this questioning in my classroom and my research was born. I was very excited to give students a voice in the grading process. Students are very driven by the grading process so I was hoping that when students were given a voice, it would lead to higher quality work in the classroom. I think that my research is most relevant to upper level elementary school and beyond. My concept that I was really focused on was motivation, particularly self-motivation. My hope is that when you leave my session you will have some new ideas, wondering, and things to try out in your own classrooms. If you want to engage in discussion around student motivation and self-grading, then you’ve come to the right place.
