The year 2020 will go down in history for a number of reasons. Set in the context of a global pandemic, race relations and our country's systemic racism came into the spotlight. As I threw myself into the learning phase of SEL, I became more aware of the platform and influence we hold as teachers. I began thinking about the importance of social awareness, and the need for conversations to start at a young age. We need to be talking about our differences, learning about them, and celebrating them. Now you might be thinking, YES! But where do we even begin? My hope is that you will have the answer to this question after attending my session. My research and implementation can be adapted to fit any elementary grade level and can be worked into just about any part of your school day. I am so excited to share my journey with you, and get you thinking about the power of a read aloud and the discussions that spark from it. If you are looking for recommendations on powerful children's books to lean into with your students, this is the session for you.
