Imagine your students setting accurate math goals aligned with what they know and don't know. Then, picture your students demonstrating self-awareness, who thirst for feedback, and can own up to their own mathematical mastery! With the intent to help my students grow in math, I decided to dive into what research says about how to increase students' self-awareness and how they can create personal short term goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely (SMART). Let's discuss the power of the formative feedback process and how this teaching practice might impact students in their ability to be self-aware and set goals that actually make sense to where they stand as learners.
