Have you heard yourself saying, “I’m too stressed” or “Life is so out of control; what CAN I control to increase my students' achievement?” If that sounds like you, you are not alone. What if there were a strategy that could not only help teachers’ mental health but also impact student achievement? I hypothesized that teacher resiliency could impact collective teacher efficacy therefore impacting student achievement. In order to develop resiliency in educators I implemented a book club with general education and special education teacher teams. Specifically, we read the book, Onward by Elena Aguilar. We focused on five strategies that best support self and social awareness and relationships skills. I have learned that by providing a platform to pursue strategies of resiliency, a community was built with a shared belief that they have the power to positively impact student achievement. As an elementary special education teacher I have had the opportunity to see how collective teacher efficacy impacts student achievement each and every day across many grade levels. I believe that when teachers are supported emotionally they perform in a way that fosters teamwork and positive relationships. Dialogue in my session will be rooted in SEL competencies: self awareness and responsible decision making. We will unpack healthy practices for teachers that increase resiliency and discuss its role on relationships and student achievement. After this session, I hope that you will be energized to find practices that can fill your heart and spark new self awareness. Hopefully you will not only use them yourself but also consider implementing with your team. See you there!
