When you are teaching a lesson, have you ever noticed that your students are writing down notes in another class’ notebook? On a scrap sheet of paper? On their desk or even their hand? If so then I am very excited to introduce you to the idea of an interactive notebook. This method can work within any subject and grade level where you are giving students content and want your students to interact with it. My main research topic was how to keep my students engaged in my class in both active and passive ways. I was finding all too many times that my students were just completing tasks and then moving on. I felt like there was no ownership of the material that we were covering. An interactive notebook provides students the opportunity to utilize the pages of their notebooks as something more than just for typical note-taking. By linking my students' thoughts and ideas with content that we discussed in class, my students are better able to stay engaged with both class concepts and their past learning experiences. If you would like to learn more about this method and discuss other methods to engage your students, this session is for you.
