“Teacher!” “He said he wouldn’t play tag with me!” Have you heard this or other scenarios that are similar to this before? If yes, then you are probably a primary or early education teacher. I am excited to share different strategies I have found through my research to help minimize the amount tattling that occurs throughout my first grade classroom. If you would like to learn more ways you can help your students solve social situations independently and minimize the amount of teacher time it takes to solve different tattles that can occur with young children, then this session is for you!

Abstract

Abstract Jessica Smith St. Cloud Blended 3 jxsmit16@smumn.edu How will implementing tattle management strategies impact classroom management in a first grade classroom? The question guiding my research is as follows: what effect will implementing different tattle management strategies have in my first grade classroom? A review of literature suggest that tattling is developmentally appropriate at the first grade level. Therefore, there is no way to eliminate tattling completely. Some strategies that I found while researching, include validating the students and their concerns. I also learned that modeling different social scenarios is important because first graders may lack the problem solving skills needed to handle the situations on their own. Having a strong classroom community and a relationship with each student can also have positive effect on managing tattling in the classroom. Through the research I have learned many strategies that help minimize the amount of tattling in the classroom, the amount of teacher time it takes to handle each tattle and providing students will the skills and outlets to handle different social situations alone. I was able to collect data through the frequency of tattles, and the length it took to handle each situation. In addition I was able to collect data on how the students felt they handled tough situation and whether or not they sought out adult help to handle those said situations. At this point in the year, I feel that these strategies have proven to be successful and I will continue to use them, especially modeling ,throughout the year.
