Do you want to connect with your students, differentiate instruction on a personal level, and hold students accountable for their reading? I am excited to announce that each of these wants can be achieved by incorporating reading conferencing into your language arts block. Reading conferencing allows for teachers and students to connect over an 8-10 minute time period. This short time has impacted my reading scores, engagement, and accountability. Who would have thought that 8-10 minutes could work wonders? Conferencing is not limited to the reading sector, in fact, this model could work for all subjects. I invite you to come to my session to learn more about connecting with students and making the best out of your language arts block.

Abstract

The guiding question to my research is as follows: How will reading conferencing with students impact student growth in reading? When researching the best practices of literacy there were a few parallels. Some of these include differentiated material and instruction, the importance of access to print rich material, and varied instruction (whole group and small group). From this research I developed a plan for my fifth grade language arts block of instruction. This platform included various types of instruction and opportunities for learning. The main focus for this action research project was on reading conferencing and student growth. The student conferences have allowed for more connections with students, increased accountability, and time for differentiated instruction. In conjunction with the conferences, students participate in reading centers that are standard/unit based. This platform calls for students to be independent within their learning. With that being said, one of my classes was not able to participate in this project. In conclusion, I have found that this implementation has been very positive. Reading conferencing has allowed for me to make connections with many of my students. I am looking to refine this model in order to build in additional skills and build more individualized instruction. Reading conferencing has greatly impacted the growth of my students.
