What is the best way to teach phonemic awareness and phonics skills to 1st-grade struggling readers? Will using a hands-on learning approach help engage students in their learning and help them retain new information? Learning to read is a complex process that follows a sequence of learned skills. Teachers need to incorporate different learning styles, activities, and approaches into their lessons to connect with all of their learners. A review of literature and research project was completed to determine how a hands-on learning approach affects students when learning phonemic awareness and phonics. Phonemic awareness and phonics are both key components when learning to read. Phonemic awareness is the process of breaking down spoken and heard sounds into phonemes. Phonics is then connecting those sounds to the written letter. For a child to learn to read they need to have proficient skills in both of these early literacy areas.
