Can we draw? Can we paint? Can we use scissors and glue? These are common questions I hear from my second graders on a daily basis. Up until this year, I have had a separate time for these crafts outside of the core subjects. When my school went in a new direction this year focusing on the arts, I was excited to revamp my literacy instruction with some new and engaging strategies. In this hands on, interactive session, we will work on practical ways to implement art into your classroom starting right away!

Abstract

My research question asks: “How will teaching literacy through an arts integration lens impact student engagement in a second grade classroom?” In my research, I found a few areas I would be focusing on, including engagement, attitude, and social-emotional growth. Through my research I have learned how to incorporate the arts into literacy instruction in my classroom. I put my question into practice by adapting the second grade reading curriculum to provide opportunities for the arts. As a result of incorporating the arts into literacy curriculum, I was able to identify student engagement level.
