Confusion rocks! Stay above the line! These were phrases we heard if you attended last summer’s Top 20 training or last fall’s conference with keynote speaker Paul Bernabei. A focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) is an essential part of the classroom, especially at an elementary. If students can better understand/regulate their emotions and decision making they will be more successful in school. How does SEL impact students academically? Behaviorally? Socially? I created a unit of lessons from the Top 20 Teachers book to help 3rd-5th grade students gain skills around being positive, avoiding negative thoughts/situations, and using their strengths. It is my hope that you will leave feeling energized about teaching positivity and growth mindset with your students, gaining an understanding of the rationale behind this SEL focus, and having a plug-and-play unit to teach your students Top 20 strategies.
