Have you felt that the standards and content expectations don’t always meet the needs of the whole student? I believe that the foundation for teaching is creating connections and relationships with students in order to obtain authentic learning. As I began thinking about how I can ensure students’ needs are being met, not just academically, I became more interested in what a culturally responsive classroom looks like. Through my research I learned about what CRT is and the effect it has on all students. It not only touches on academics, but also connects with students on a personal level. I take a look into how one’s own culture, parent communication, using student interests to develop lessons, and connecting school and community affects students. How does implementing culturally responsive teaching benefit kindergarten students? Culturally responsive teaching is a hot topic in education right now. Many districts are providing professional development around it. If you’re like me you continually asked yourself, “what is CRT really?” Through my research I learned there are many facets of CRT and I chose to focus on a couple to help enhance my teaching. I chose to look at how parent communication affects student behavior and learning, and how using a more personalized approach to lesson planning can promote engagement. I consistently observed and wrote anecdotal notes on the happenings of my classroom. I used this information to help guide my teaching. If you are wondering about what CRT is and how it can be used in your classroom, please join me in this session!
