When people think of success in the classroom, they generally only think of academic success, but most times, social-emotional success may not even cross their minds. A social-emotional strategy such as mindfulness is necessary for students of all ages, especially for special education students. When researching mindfulness, my hope was to find out if implementing a short mindfulness session would impact their behavior in my small group environment, along with other academic and social settings throughout their day. I wanted my students to be able to use these mindfulness strategies throughout their day to help regulate their strong emotions and prevent them from engaging in behaviors. I implemented this with my first-grade special education students, but it can be applicable to students in grades K-5. This strategy can also be implemented across a variety of discipline areas. If you work with students who struggle with behavior, maybe all they need is a little slice of mindfulness. Please join me to see if your students could benefit from some of the mindfulness strategies I implemented with my students.
