Social emotional learning is a term that is a huge focus of education right now and mindfulness practices are just one of the many techniques to help that social emotional need that students have. As educators, we strive to teach the standards, as well as teaching them life lessons, like soft skills, that can help students in their futures. I wanted to find a way to incorporate social emotional learning into my 6th grade classroom every day and mindfulness became the focus of my research. I was curious to see the impact inserting this practice had on the resilience, classroom relationships and perseverance of my students. I saw my students struggling with managing their emotions and not having the strategies to help themselves. My practice could be implemented in any upper elementary or middle school classroom. Although my results were not what I expected or had hoped for, I hope that it can be a learning experience for you to provide strategies that you could bring to your classroom. Mindfulness practices can be applied to any discipline or grade level. So bring an open mind and your breathing strategies to channel your inner mindfulness during this session!
