With so little time in the day, it seems like you only have enough time to get in the core curriculum; however, there is one more vital subject that needs to be included- social emotional learning. My research was based on how to include this and explore what the possible benefits could be. I have brought morning meetings into my classroom this year and have watched my class become closer to each other, open up more so I and other students could get to know them, and overall build a very strong, family-like classroom community. I focused on using sharing during my morning meetings to help foster relationships among students and with me. I believe that including social-emotional learning in any grade level can be extremely beneficial. My hope is that after this session, you walk away feeling empowered to make time for social-emotional learning and will have ideas to get started!
