A school day is full of noise - teaching, learning, laughing, the phone ringing, an announcement on the intercom, students coming and going from the classroom, and so on. With all of this for students to take in and process, why add to the noise? Inspired by Michael Grinder’s ENVOY and American Sign Language, I began finding ways to manage my classroom nonverbally. In doing so, I hoped to maximize learning time and minimize interruptions and distractions, while growing my students’ independence. I hoped to create a classroom environment that was predictable, comfortable, and a space for all to have the opportunity to learn. Although my research was done in a fifth grade classroom, I feel that all elementary grades could benefit from these nonverbal management strategies. Join me as I share the findings of my research and the impact on my students and our learning environment. I hope to leave you with some ideas on how to take your classroom management to the next level.
