Hitting, kicking, biting, screaming-all common occurrences in young children, yet all behaviors adults would like to see less of. What can be done to lessen the frequency of these behaviors in young children? I explored ways to intentionally teach children ages one to five about their emotions. As an early childhood teacher teaching ECFE classes, I currently do not have a scope and sequence curriculum to teach my students about all the emotions they are experiencing and how to work through them. My hope was to create some standard lessons that I could consistently teach through the school year that would assure I covered all emotions and had resources that would successfully address these emotions. I explored the implementation of art activities, songs, story telling and introducing various manipulatives. I was surprised to see that even one year olds could start to recognize and label emotions with repeated exposure and how interested all my students were in learning these concepts. I would love to have a discussion with you to share the resources I have explored during my research and hear of any resources you are currently using to intentionally teach young children about their emotions. This discussion could be beneficial for those teaching children ages one through eight.
