“I can’t”, “This is hard '' and “I’m not good at Math '' were phrases I heard way too often the last couple of years. How many times have we as teachers heard students say these phrases and give up on themselves? The stress of the pandemic really opened my eyes to the way children think about their learning. It seems as though the majority of them feel like they are not smart and don’t believe they can grow in their learning. My research was focused on how a growth mindset can help students with their math skills. However I believe my research is relevant for all grade levels and with any subject. My hope is that you can come away from this conference with a new understanding of why students tend to shut down and strategies to help them build a growth mindset. So, if you are looking for a deep discussion about how to motivate students when they seem stuck or struggling this is the session for you.
