“Here comes the sun!” This saying doesn’t come to mind when you think of many public school classrooms. Most of the time when you step foot into your classroom for the first time, you’re greeted with white cinderblock walls, carpeted floors and those amazing fluorescent lights up ahead. Although many teachers bring their own spark to their rooms to make their students feel welcomed, how many think about bringing in nature? Through my research I have found different ways teachers can bring in the natural world to their rooms that can benefit their students immensely. My research touches on bringing natural light into the classroom (even if you don’t have windows) and how it can benefit students' overall learning experience, especially with reading, having students make connections to classroom content while being in the natural world, and many more. After my session, it is my hope that you walk away with a few ideas of how you can bring the natural world into your classroom and how they can benefit your students not only with their reading ability, but also with their overall love of learning!
