General music in middle school. I often hear from other music educators, "these are the 'extra' kids, the ones who didn't do band, choir, or orchestra." That mindset is going to set us up for failure before we hit day one. Is general music for middle school difficult because the curriculum is boring? Are we not enriching our students with enough interesting things? We all have our standards to reach, but we need to revamp and turn general music for middle school (and high school) into an interactive, fun, and engaging learning experience. How many times have you heard groans from your older students that they don't like general music class? This seminar will discuss ways in which we can turn that around and increase the significance and importance of music education to our older students, while still reaching state and national standards.
