As an educator, have you ever involved your students in the formation of their learning goals? Are they able to self-assess their academic growth and set SMART goals in order to reach their learning goals? Do they truly understand what their scores meant to them in relation to standards based grading? I am excited about my action research because it has taught my students to self-assess their progress against rubrics that we created together and yielded more confident and motivated learners. I believe that my research is relevant to most grade levels, and is easily adaptable to other disciplines. My main concept was student self-assessment and my research connects to many other concepts. It intertwines growth mindset, data tracking binders, SMART goals, building rubrics with students, motivation and confidence. So if you are looking for an opportunity to develop the self-reflective and self-motivated 21st century learners that our world demands, this session is for you! See you there!

Abstract

“To what extent does student self-assessment and self-assessment and data tracking impact my 4th grade students?” My action research strives to answer the question, “How might student self-assessment and data tracking impact my fourth grade students?” I focused on teaching students how to self-assess and apply this knowledge to their own learning. Each student kept a running record of their pre-test and post test data, they set SMART goals to help them obtain proficiency and reflected upon their work based on a rubric that we built together. This feedback spiral worked in conjunction with a growth mindset unit and the data tracking system. In order to evaluate my students’ ability to self assess, I conducted two surveys that measured how student self assessment impacted their motivation and confidence. Throughout the process the students were also required to track their pre and post test data and reflect upon their work. These reflections led them to set SMART goals that helped them achieve proficiency on fourth grade standards. I also provided students with feedback in regard to their ability to self-assess. Based on all my data, I found that student self-assessment had a huge impact on my fourth grade students. It not only increased their academic success and made learning more meaningful, but it also created an environment where my students became more motivated and confident learners. My action research greatly impacted my students’ academic success and personal development. I am also going to continue implementing my action research and focus more on giving students feedback in regard to their ability to self-assess. I will also be seeking more information in regard to how to give them feedback that will improve their ability to self-assess.
