All right boys and girls, it’s time for writing! (Writer’s Workshop begins.) “How do you spell this?” “I’m done! (2 minutes in.)” “I don’t know what to write about.” “I can’t write.” If this sounds like your classroom you need to attend my seminar! My research is geared primarily towards Kindergarten, but could easily fit the needs of 1st graders. My topic was about finding the best way to utilize Writer’s Workshop and maximize my Kindergarteners’ writing potential. I focused my research on choice, modeling, variety, and motivation. I look forward to having a discussion with YOU about how you can set up your Writer’s Workshop and get it moving in a direction where your students enjoy a quick mini-lesson, willingly work independently, and love sharing their stories with classmates!

Abstract

What is the Best Way to Utilize Writer’s Workshop to Maximize My Kindergarteners’ Writing Potential? The question driving my research is: What is the best way to utilize Writer’s Workshop to maximize my Kindergarteners’ writing potential? A review of literature suggested the best way to utilize Writer’s Workshop is by a mini lesson, going out to practice, being taught again, and sharing time. Through research, I honed in on the following concepts to strengthen my Writer’s Workshop by focusing on choice, modeling, variety, and motivation. Research has taught me better ways to approach writing that suits my Kindergarteners developmentally. I was able to find material that provided me with daily lessons to help my students progress individually while addressing state standards. Research also pointed me in the right direction for setting up my Writer’s Workshop space so it was conducive to Kindergarteners and encouraged their desire to write. While my data could not be fully measured in numbers with graphs, it became more about how my students felt as writers and their progression over time with their writing samples. As a result of my research and implementation I will continue teaching Writer’s Workshop and adding new materials that tailor to my students’ needs. I will continue to guide my students’ writing through strategies I teach during mini lessons, yet allowing them to include the strategy when they are ready. In addition, I will continue to seek more information on utilizing my Writer’s Workshop to maximize my students’ writing potential.
