How many of you are tired of looking around your classroom during small group time to see students off task, not engaged, or not understanding the learning activities? I am excited to share my experience with blended learning that has helped me solve these issues. Through my research, my main concept was blended learning via the Station Rotation Model. From this research, I was led to focus on student engagement, differentiated learning, and student success. I believe my research is relevant to most grade levels and can be adapted to other disciplines. If you are looking for an engaging discussion about implementing blended learning that has many benefits for both your students and you, as the teacher, then this is the session for you! If you choose my session please bring a cell phone or device with a QR code scanner for the presentation if possible.

Abstract

The question guiding my research is as follows: What impact will blended learning have on students in the area of reading? Following an extensive review of the literature on the topic of blended learning, I was led to the Station Rotation Model to use for blended learning in a second-grade classroom. The review of literature also gave areas of focus for implementation 1) student engagement 2) differentiated learning to meet individual needs, and 3) monitoring student success. When developing a plan for this instruction model I needed to learn about ways to provide instruction at varying levels through the use of technology, ways to monitor engagement from the teacher and student point of view, as well as monitor student success on tasks given and student feelings related to them. Through my research, I gained ideas an insight as to how to create student groupings fro stations, how to level activities so that I could meet individual needs, and how to have the ability to monitor student success within each station activity. The use of the Station Rotation Model has led to greater student collaboration, independence in problem solving, higher engagement levels, and success for all students at their own levels of learning. With this, I as the teacher, have gained more time to work with students in a small group due to the fact that my other students are actively engaged in the station tasks given to them. I have discovered that my station activities are showing success, but I am in need of finding more options for students when it comes to the total online learning station. As a result of my implementation of blended learning using the Station Rotation Model within reading, I will continue with station activities due to improved engagement in activities, and higher rates of student success. For continued growth, I will continue to gather resources to give more variety to my students.
