How many of us, as teachers, have observed students who are surprised after a summative assessment is completed? We hear, "I don't feel like I did too well on this. I thought I knew the material so well!" Formative assessments are great opportunities for teachers to monitor what their students know and can also provide moments for students to self assess. My research focuses on students checking in on their own understanding of the material with the use of metacognitive strategies. The goal was to see how the metacognition impacts student self-awareness of learning as a process. Over 12 weeks, many new learning strategies were introduced and followed up by reflection to increase the opportunity for students to be involved in the learning process. The work that I've implemented would fit best in a middle school or high school classroom. I feel the strategies are open to all subjects as they help students develop skills to monitor their own learning over time. Participants can expect a safe space to have an open discussion on metacognitive strategies in the classroom, and leave with an idea of how this work can be applied to your own classroom formative assessments. Are you ready for your learners to be more involved?
